Icon sizes: 256x256, 128x128, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, 16x16 File formats: ICO, GIF, PNG, BMP ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Why Should You Use PNG Image Format in Your Web Design? The benefits of including PNG images in website designing over the different file types such as GIF and JPEG; the image format helps to make really amazing and wonderful icons that will wow your consumersThe PNG file type was introduced quite a while back; it was brought out in the market in 1995/96 to make up for the shortcomings of the the common GIF file type. However, it did not catch on because the then browsers were unable to support the state of the art features of PNG so internet designers and developers had to include it in their designs restrictedly. One of the major blocks that marred the features of PNG was with Microsoft Internet Explorer which was the most well known and widely used browsers of that period; IE had limited provision for PNG support which equated to the fact that the format could only be made use of to a bare minimum. Then, things changed when IE7 was brought out; this new offering from Microsoft has aided in increasing the usability of PNGs. So here is a look at three reasons why PNG is by far the most useful image formats in the market today: You can get see through images or a feature called alpha transparency: When you pitch GIF against PNG, will notice that a very distinct advantage with PNG is that you will only be able to save a particular color transparently through the use of GIF this simply means that you can get the color regardless of it being opaque or transparent with no other color in between; however, with PNG, you get a distinct benefit; because the format is capable of producing semi transparent pixels. With this attribute, you can save a PNG picture with a soft drop shadow and then fuse it with a background that suits your taste. You can also use the image as a watermark or a gradient background. The format allows for the smooth fading of hues from completely opaque to transparent, and hence you will be able to view the webpage below They look spectacular: It is a well known fact that PNG images give you extreme flexibility also; there are a myriad of other advantages to incorporating this format. For example, if you choose a JPG image, you lose a portion of the details from the initial image each time the file is saved, so after a while, you will notice a distinct downgrade in the finesse of the pictures. Even though, this problem has been resolved in GIF and you can store the images without losing any data, GIF only allows for a limited 256 color palette, which makes it quite useless if you are going to store a snap shot. But, with PNG, you will get the perfect features of both these formats; you get a full color display like the one used in JPEG file type and it also provides managed color palette as seen in GIF files. At the same time the storage of the picture is without loss so the picture stays as it is even if you save the file several times. PNG is self optimizing: A serious problem that web designers need to handle frequently is the anomaly due to which the contrast and brightness of the commuter screen has to be changed to see the the display appropriately; the issue comes into the picture due to the difference in the Gamma setting used for the different monitors. Gamma is a technique used to spread the the light across the display surface. However, various operating systems use distinct Gamma settings. Therefore, an image that is color corrected specifically for Windows may appear abnormal in Mac. Again, in this situation the innovative PNG format comes to the rescue, in PNG, you can save the pictures with an inherent Gamma correction feature so despite the differences in operating systems; the Gamma settings will be changed on its own to display an image with the perfect ratios of contrast as well as brightness. ![]()
